OUR

ACTIVITIES

Genetic improvement of sorghum for bioenergy and biorefinery: studies of high biomass and high sugar content.

We are focusing on breeding of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), an energy and biorefinery crop, by  ”genome breeding” (a new breeding method) using Plant Genome big data accumulated by NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing).

In this process, we carry out studies of QTL (Quantitative trait Loci) analysis, QTL cloning, GWA (Genome wide association), molecular biology, and physiology etc. to understand the correlation between the biological phenomena and functions of the corresponding genes. The obtained knowledge is used for breeding, i.e.  pyramiding them to the elite varieties (genome breeding).
